The first artefact was made to be used in a later query were people will be asked to describe what type of a character they feel that the deferent variations of it have. I created these illustrations using 3ds max and Photoshop based on an ordinary object a stapler. I had no specific character personality in mind while creating my artefact but simply to use facial parts as well as changing it in to a more organic structure and see how it will be developed. I limited myself by only changing the shape and adding facial clues on my object adding more human characteristics for example limps that could be used through body language to express emotions that would create too many variables making any of my findings unreliable. Keeping in mind that I have these two limitations of what I can do to my artefacts (objects) I intent to create a variety of characters to be used to gather information and then try to see where it leads me. My hopes are that the last character will seem to be just another one of my artefacts but in reality the expressions will be to express specific emotions and see if the audience can identify them. I hope to show that by imputing facial parts as well as giving it a more organic look help the audience to connect with the character in some way and then express what emotions they attribute to the character. I am interested to see if people see emotions express by the character and most importantly if these emotions are constant from person to person.

As the first artefact was based on an ordinary object, my goal for the second one, was to create something bizarre and unusual. The actual object for my research in reality plays a small part in what I am trying to achieve. As my goal is to see how the audience respond and whether they will attribute emotions or not and if there is consistency between them. What you see is a crazy wagon that seems to be part of a Wild West movie with a machine gun. I chose to create something like this because of the nature of its use is co-national, and without a driver or horses dragging it, it is useless. As it is made to kill people. I wanted to confuse the audience and try and see their responses and whether they will be able to give me a small inside in to how they interpret the characters. Though my research I came to a confusing point were the character designer makes decisions on how the character will look like and act, based on a variety of factors (ex. Personality, look and style of animation). But how the audience interprets the final result, is based on the success or failure of the designer to interpret the factors to create an appealing character. I am trying to do the opposite and give them something that looks like a character and let them create its personality, or not. I believe if I find a large enough audience that will be willing to participate in my experiment, whatever the results may be, It will give me a better inside on the development of characters. Even if the results are questionable, because of the complexity of the task and my inexperience to developed characters and my bias, it could influence the structure of the query.

For my third artefact I wanted to create a realistic object that could exist in the real world in a similar form so I created a candlestick covered with melted wax. This is an object different to the other five I am making because I am not anthropomorphizing it like I do with the others. Instead I made a realistic looking object to see whether people can find animal or human like features in it on their own.

I will ask the people looking at this object to tell me where on this object they see eyes, noses or any other human or animal parts and whether they see any evidence of expression and in what form. They will be given a variety of simple shapes that will be corresponding to different parts, for example ‘O’ to describe eyes ‘X’ for the nose and many more with the option of adding their own. They will be asked to draw these shapes on the image to show me what they see. It is very important not to lead people with my questions and to see their response without guiding them. The point of the exercise is to see how much work the viewer does in the process of anthropomorphization.

While I was creating the candlestick I realized that the shadow of the object has potential to be expressive as well. Through my research I learned how important the silhouette is on an object and that while creating the character we should always be aware that the character should be recognizable from its silhouette . Therefore I made some changes and continue working with the premise that the shadow should be a part of the image and not a side effect of the more realistic nature of the render I was after. It should compliment my research enquiries.

My idea for the latest artefact was inspired by Luxo Jr, the character that

Pixar Animation Studios first created for the Siggraph exhibition in 1986.

This character has developed over the years with character properties that I Thought

I could use. For example it’s an easy character to recreate with plenty of references and simple enough to be created within my time frame, even more important is the amount of information that we have about this character from the time of its creation to the present day. We know how the object looked like before it was made into the animated character and we also know why changes where done to the original character from the articles that were published during the Siggraph exhibition of 1986.

My goal is to take the specific character and remove the small variations that were done and create the object of the Character.

I found some blue-prints of an old model of the Luxo Lamp and from those I created my characters, gave them similar colours and basically created a “lamp”.

I want to see how many people will recognise it as a “Luxo Lamp” the Pixar character and how many will see it just as a “lamp”.

The differences between them are quite obvious, but I feel that the success of the “Luxo Lamp” the Pixar “Luxo Jr.” animated character will overwhelmingly win as an image and more people will relate to that, than the alternative “lamp” .

Through my questionnaire I hope to see how differently people view my “Luxo Lamp” character, upon whether they had knowledge of “Luxo Jr.” the character that

Pixar Animation Studios first created, or Not.

Board Game_the Real one

Rules
It’s a board game playable by two people/teams, which compete to achieve one main goal: To kill the opponent’s leader.
The board is divided into team territories and the peace zone. The peace zone, which is at the beginning of the board, is the area where the players place their pieces in the regions corresponding to the team territory (X territory and Y territory). Within this area, it is also forbidden to attack; hence, it is the peace zone.
The rest of the board is constituted of 2 territories, which are separated by 3 walls giving each team two lanes. Leaders are allowed to cross the wall anytime, whereas the followers cannot unless they have the opportunity to attack diagonally.
Each team consists of a leader and 4 followers. The game begins when the players decide who sets his spermatozoa first, this can be achieved by leaving it to luck such as tossing a coin and for the upcoming games the players take turns.
The first player sets his pieces allowing the second player to evaluate the strategy of his opponent and set his own as well. The last player to set his pieces makes the first move. Each player should set his pieces within the peace zone of his territory.
The leaders have the ability to move or attack sideways, diagonally and straight by one block (as in the diagram) for each move, and can’t move backwards. The followers can move the same way but can only attack diagonally. Each player has to move two individual pieces each turn. In case a follower crosses the wall to attack and enters the territory of his opponent, he has to stay there until he finds an opportunity to attack again diagonally and cross the wall.

The territories contain some blocks tagged with Bs and Fs. If a player moves to a “B tagged” block, he has to take one bonus card, whereas if he moves to an “X tagged” one, he has to take a disadvantage card (F) and follow the instructions on the card*. When the card is taken the tagged block with a B card is then inactive for the rest of the game, and acts as a normal block. To remember which B blocks have been used, you can use the blue and red cross shaped fimo.
If a leader gets to the finish line before he kills the opponent’s leader, the game has to restart until the goal is achieved.

The rules of the cards:

Can be saved and use any time on the player turn. But the opponent must have the opportunity to see your bonus card as soon as it is picked up.

Each card has different abilities, which are stated on the inside of the card, as followed:

“Hop” card: It can be used to replace one of the two available movements of the player by allowing him to move one of his followers (i.e. not the leader) two blocks rather than one, but does not allow the player to use it for attacking. If there is a tag in the intermediate block, it must be ignored. The card must be saved and used in a following round but must be shown to the opponent as soon as it’s picked up.

“Overtake”: It can be used to replace one of the two available movements of the player by allowing him to move one of his followers (i.e. not the leader) two blocks rather than one. It can also be used for attacking and the player must pick up another card if there is a tagged intermediate block. The card must be saved and used in a following round but must be shown to the opponent as soon as it’s picked up.

“Guard”:
This card facilitates the player with the ability to defend any one of his pieces by locking the piece at the same position and protecting him from being killed. However, the opponent can still attack the specific piece (i.e. cross the team line) and land on the same block at the same time without affecting the other pieces. The piece still stays on guard until the player decides to move it. This card can be played immediately or saved for a following round and must be shown to the opponent as soon as it’s picked up.

F: Cards

“Misinformation”: This card forbids from performing your second move, but gives the opponent the opportunity to move one of your followers instead, but not the leader. This will take effect on your next turn and not immediately.

“Freeze”: This card gives your opponent the opportunity to freeze (i.e. prevents it from moving) one of your followers for two rounds, on his turn immediately after you pick up the card.

I got it From Zbrush Central

This is one of the many images that I found out there that really show some very interesting conceptions by using the tools offered to create 3D. He has made a realistic (as he perceives it) image of a ninja turtle, not just the cartoon version but a more anatomically correct one. I like it because he didn’t just make a good 3d sculpture based on the comic but he used this idea and gave life to it and personality. I believe that he could use more reference to make a more realistic shell and try to give this hero a lot of scars in order to make it look like it wasn’t just a creation but had a pass and shit happens. I would prefer if it was obvious that he had lost something like an eye or a finger. I like his idea of using one colour that represents the hero, black and white. On the other hand because of this and a not so dynamic angle with a simple background, it’s missing depth in the image.

"The art of seeing"

I took a walk to start my online journal assignment and the first object I found useful for this was a clay brick, one of the most ordinary building blocks in England. This object has a very diffuse red or brown colour with a rough texture, like a sandpaper. It has a rectangular cube-like shape. I can’t say that it has a distinguishable smell and I wouldn’t try to taste it. It’s very solid therefore it doesn’t bounce when you throw it and also it’s not reflective or transparent. I chose this object as I’m sure that I will definitely come across it while trying to create virtual environments.

The next object I found on my way was a certain concrete column that it’s used to prevent cars passing through. It has a smoother surface than the brick, but this one is made from mixed cement with sand, gravel, shale and water. It seems that it has been molded into this rigid and cylindrical shape and then polished. It’s colour is grey and it’s so hard that nothing can break it apart from a bulldozer or maybe a very fast driver. You can distinguish some small air bubbles left from the molding process and also some even smoother and shinier areas made by the people touching it with their oily hands as they go through, since it’s located just at the entrance of the park.

I also took some pictures of the road, which is also a very common material that I’ll have to use in the creation of my future projects. The road is made from tar and gravels and stones of variable colours, such as red and black. Some of the gravels are shiny and have small reflective highlights. You can sometimes find some that have a coloured glass-like appearance. The asphalt has been polished from the car tires over the years. If you touch it you can feel the smooth surface of the gravel but the hard areas as well, that are between the bigger gravel made by very small crashed gravels and tart.

This is another photo I took of the road inside the park and because of the fertile ground on the sides of it and the high level of moisture, there appears to be some green grass growing in it, which makes the surface smoother but also slippery.

In Cyprus, as a small community as it is, most people know each other and create ineluctable social networks, within which I’ve had a good influence from a lot of people in the art business. One of our family friends works with paintings, who taught me well how to use watercolors in earlier years and another one owns a handcraft workshop, where I’ve learnt a few things on how to work with wires, fabrics, threads, fimos etc. More recently though, I got to work in my dad’s office, who works as an architect, and I helped him a lot by making 3D buildings of a few architectural designs on the 3dmax and a bigger work which involved the interior design of a flat in the form of pictures and a video. The most important offer I got so far was from someone who owns a comic store, to illustrate a small comic story next year and then publish it, after he visited my blogger and got excited with my work. I hope that I’ll be able to fulfill his criteria.

Jool's- The essential point of networking is human contact. Business has killed networking by making it something for the career orientated person.

I believe that even if networking has opened the doors for hundreds and different business opportunities, it still creates new ones. Except the buying and selling services that they offer, now the business oriented people understand that we, as users, have the need to communicate and interact with other people and that if a businessman does not want to have a specific business and sell his product through several of networks, he’ll join the biggest market, advertising. It’s where the business comes to offer us “free” services with exchange of creation large networks to promote their advertisements. My point is that as long as people have the need to communicate the businesses will support and promote networking to make a profit out of it.

-Kiss Ass Not so Very board Game- Progress

The last lecture helped me to understand a bit better what my task was for this year’s first project, the “kick ass not so very board game”. Until now I thought I had to search for the best selling board games in the market, understand the task, some of the rules and see the fun of them and then try to redesign one of them. However I was never a big fun of board games so I have no idea what’s out there.
It seems that I don’t have to find a board game since I’m able to design my own imaginary one. So my search will focus on board games that just look cool. Considering I like watching fights and be a part of them without the real consequences, like pain, something like this.I need to make up a game that includes fights but also has enough rules, tasks and depends partly on luck to be considered as a board game and also to include as much sci-fi as I can. If I would do simply a more hi-tech version of the game showing in the picture above, I would make something like one of these this video arcade games

but I would eventually lose the point. Finally I’ve decided to make a card game that would have all the fun you get from it and the cool sci-fi with action. The idea is as followed:
It’s a game where the players can choose their character and weapons. To play they have to throw the dice which determine the cards that the players have to take in order to use them to customize their characters with special attack tricks, real time action buttons, which will be useful in the fighting round. They will have to reload their guns when they empty or switch to a secondary one. The game can take different variations using some modes available. Therefore the players can control their characters, using all these cards and controllers, which will be projected as a very realistic hologram in the middle.

I made this idea as a quick sketch to see how I should design the game and help me find potential problems.
Now I need to start breaking down the project into smaller tasks, like understanding at first how card games are played so I can make a more reasonable interactive console for my imaginary players. Then I’ll focus on the modelling of the characters, as this is my strongest skill, and afterwards on animating the game, for which I’ll need a lot of practise to reach a satisfactory result. I know that during the building up of the game on 3dmax I’ll be able to add extra things on the basic idea of the game which was just described.

The past weeks i have spent lots and lots of hours trying to learn this programme, which i believe i have at least reached a point where i can give it a go and start sculpturing. unfortunately my pc hasn't got the capability of taking me to the next step and create what i would really like to and it simply keeps crashing and stoping me from making anything worth showing for. I feel like the time i spent on using the programme was not in vain, but let's face it i now do have more knowledge in this sector and when i get a better pc i will give it another try and hopefully this time i'll manage to do something showable.

base on this i will work
I was trying to understand my task as a part of understanding my self, which i must say was pretty hard. while trying to figure this out, my thoughts were moving from the past to the presen an then back again and i realised that i couldn't just ignore the fact that i have changed so much over the years, so i narrowed my thoughts to the present. I began by describing things in my life like objects, habits or several other things that i do. the basic id ea was to make an animation that includes pieces from my independent work, that are related to each other and to myself and that represent the feelings that i experience while doing this project.

i decided to make a video with a bit of a walkthrough feeling like you are watching a story and that i would use an image of my face so that i can state myself and show some things i will make that will demonstrate the confusion that i feel about myself.

for me to create the avatar i need to break my work down into parts. i would like to start by showing a tree that would whirl around and lead to an alternative dimension, a weird city where i would own one of the houses and the camera will then move through the door. i thought i could make a room inside the house but on the other hand a box floating in the room will be more suitable according to my goal of wanting to show how isolated i am from the outside world. the box can be made by some walls that i will make with watercolours, as i really like working with them and plus they are one of the things i remember doing since forever and so make me feel like home. i would like to make some drawings as well in order to use them as graffiti on the walls, of which one will be covered using the drawing i made with my face. more importantly i will use the 3D capabilities of 3Dmax to "shoot" an interesting video and also model some objects i would like to put in the room as well.

I have finished my video and i tried lots of different camera angles and materials and the outcome is shown below:

The room

for this project we have to make a small render video and show 2 pictures. i made one of the pictures shown, on zbrush, which took me about the same time it took me to creat the video. what i made is a dragon and the chinese chinese signs which mean dragon, if translated in english, as i was born in the year of the dragon according to the chinese calendar.

vSide is an online 3D environment, something like “Second Life”, which I found and started playing on it after creating an account for it. I will try to explain briefly how this game is played.

You are able to choose one of the three major offered cities: Raijuku, New Venezia and LaGenoaAires.

Next you can choose one of the places, like the ones above in the picture. In each one of these you can do different things such as listen to broadcast music, “buy” clothes and accessories, watch video-clips and basically hang around with other people.

You can change the way you look by choosing some of the optional features for your avatar.

In the left in the image, you can see the title and details of the song being played. In the middle you can transport to locations, check your friend-list, customize your avatar and shop. You can also define your mood, perform one of the available actions in specific ways like dance, show expressions and generally enchant your conversations.

For me online games in general, such as vSide or Second Life, can be referred to altogether as the game of pretending. Having played other mmo-games before, where I was given many roles by the game creators, I felt like being far away from reality. Once I was a soldier, another time a hero, a fighter, an elf and lots of other magical things. Having a mission though, credits to collect and levels to complete, make people have fun while playing, which is the main reason I was addicted to them. They actually include competition and the potential to become a better player in addition to interacting with other people, which is the only thing virtual reality games provide. What I really want to say is that I don’t really realise how you can get addicted to virtual reality games, like “Second Life” since I don’t see the real fun in them, which basically should be the main aim of a game.
Mmo-games were not such a realistic thing, but that doesn’t knock you down until you stop playing for a while to interact with your reality, since you become one with your character and forget about yourself and your surroundings. You basically become addicted. The game offers you a whole new world: the scenery of it, your alternative self, magic and interaction with people playing the game, only, from all over the world. I was one of the people who would ditch school or real people, to play the game or talk to my online “friends”.
To justify other people’s addiction, I would like to say that you don’t have any burden of consequences, guilt or any weight on your shoulders. This is because you don’t know who anyone really is and you can show any state of mind without having to deal with any consequences that may arise in the aftermath of tomorrow. You can sit and talk to someone and express yourself fully without having to worry about their feelings or the impression they make about you, since you will never face them.
For my better understanding of the game, as I was experimenting with vSide, I thought it would be fun for me to play a role that had absolutely nothing to do with my real self. I was swearing people, calling them games, annoyed them and basically acted like a jackass. I also played an extremely kind character, a racist, a homophobic and another time a homosexual. I could even mimic celebrities. I was only trying to prove that pretending at any level was possible and really easy and because this was a virtual reality I did not have any regrets afterwards.
I saw a video once saying that games should be treated as a mental illness, because they are addictive. From far away you cannot understand the attraction but once you start playing you begin to understand why they are so popular. I believe that on the other hand, they give people the opportunity to express their alter egos, as they might not have the potential to do in real life. The games provide you a medium in which you can create a character based on your thoughts, dream and fantasies. Personally I’d rather play actual games, which have a scenario or a plot and basically the old-fashioned games based on science fiction and extreme situations.

For this week we were asked to find an image that screams colour and light. I started thinking about what I should present, and searching the work of famous artists to figure out what they wanted to show using light and colour. But I did not want to simply put images with colourful lights or even put the interpretation of the artist for his painting. While I was looking at several images I found this picture of stain glass, without knowing who made it, which I believe completes the requirements I had in mind because it clearly combines the light with colour. The colours of the glass pieces are simply enhanced even more as a result of the light passing through the glass instead of reflecting on it.

Definition of Art

The definition of art is controversial and there are is no real answer to the question what is art. What i can only say is my own personal opinion for the matter which means that there is no absolut theory. I believe that art is what people make for aesthetic reasons and not for practical ones.Simlpy if any object is being created or changed for aesthetic reasons (even if the artist does not what to make it look better) that alteration or creation is called art. If something is created or improved for practical reasons only, as a part of an engineering design that was made with the idea of how to evolve something just to maximize its functions, i believe it's not art. Since many things on a painting or anything someone creates can be made by accident, one of the controversial parts of the definition of art is if those characteristics of the particular piece were planned to be made by the artist or if we are in a place to consider any accident as art piece. But many times we call something artistic because it gives us a feeling of awe even if its creator was not an artist. Is every person who is being creative called an artist? I believe every one can define art based on his/her likes and dislikes and experience of life. Everyone has a right to call the greatest piece of art, as judged by others, a junk and a junk a piece of art. I do not believe that knowledge about art history or techniques or generally any connection with the art environment is essential for a personal opinion to be appreciated about an art piece. In other words I do not identify the existence of right and wrong when it has to do with art thus anyone can criticise or feel free to make art. In my personal view art shouldn't occupy the life of an artist because many interesting or distructing facts are happening around us and a lot of people face them in a different way from the view of an artist. Some people suffer to produce art and some people suffer to survive.

Assignment: Example of Reflecting

I have been watching lots of movies and series on the computer for the last four weeks, and I must say that they make one of the best ways for me to get inspired. I believe that watching already-made production helped me and my group utilize the time and diminish the trouble on our work more efficiently. As watching movies, is enjoyable I am able to make breaks from work and still not lose any opportunities to expand my knowledge.
We always think about ways to reflect any thoughts or experience in our every day lives. However as this Assignment requires examples I can simply try and explain some. For instance I have been watching a great amount of mystery stories (Agatha Kristy, Monk, Colombus, Hercules Pouaro). These movies have helped me to see things with a different point of view using the perspective of what is and what is not. What is true and what is fable. I’ve applied this by watching my work and thinking if someone can understand what the point is or if my way of presenting it does not reflect my idea.
Another example is that I have also watched some of the BBC planet earth documentaries, for which I admired the fact that they have used high quality techniques in the making of a documentary and that they make a stop motion clip which shows the transition from one season to the other. I wanted to recreate something like that so I did a small experiment of stop motion with a flower, which you can also find in my blogger.
“The Graduate”, also one of the most famous movies in my house, made me thinking about its soundtrack. When you hear the “Mrs Robinson” song you get the feeling that the movie was based on the lyrics of the song rather than the song made for the movie. I used this idea for choosing a song for my animation for the pixelation project and I came up with Matthew and Son by Cat Stevens, which I believe reflects my original idea that I had for the story

This is the final stage of this mini stopmotion production. I would like to make more things with the material that I had and make it sychronize better with the music, but it seems that my computer has reached its limits and I realized that it takes too much time to work on
it as my pc makes the process much slower. Therefore I will leave it like this, except if for some reason this comes up again..
